Affogato at Home: Espresso Meets Dessert
Share
An affogato is barely a recipe — it's one shot of hot espresso poured directly over a scoop of vanilla ice cream — but the timing and ratio matter more than the simplicity suggests.
Building the Perfect Affogato
Use a small, cold glass or bowl (a warm one melts the ice cream before the espresso even hits it). Add one scoop of good vanilla ice cream or gelato, pull a single shot of espresso, and pour it directly over the top table-side, right before eating. A rich Colombian espresso blend works well here — its chocolate and caramel notes complement vanilla instead of getting lost under the cream's sweetness the way a very light, acidic roast can.
The whole point is contrast: hot against cold, bitter against sweet, and a texture that goes from solid to half-melted in the roughly ninety seconds it takes to eat. Serve it immediately — an affogato that sits for five minutes is just melted coffee ice cream, which is fine, but it's not the same drink.
Two Ways to Change It Up
- Add a shaving of dark chocolate or a dusting of cocoa powder on top before pouring the espresso for extra bitterness contrast.
- Swap in a scoop of coffee or hazelnut gelato instead of vanilla for a more intense, less sweet version.
Before You Start
- Chill the glass or bowl ahead of time
- Use real espresso, not strong drip coffee — the crema matters visually and texturally
- Serve and eat within a couple of minutes
